Erysimum - The Perfect Perennials

Erysimum

You just can’t beat Erysimum for their reliability and longevity! These cheerful little shrubs (more commonly known as Wallflowers) will start flowering as early as spring, keep going throughout the summer months and well into the early autumn without the need for care or attention - just deadhead them regularly to prolong flowering.

Wallflowers are a member of the Brassicaceae family, commonly known as the cabbage family and are great for adding colour and fragrance to containers and borders. If you're looking for plants that look good all year round but require very little maintenance, then consider Erysimum.

These hardy, fast growing perennials are well suited to rockeries, borders and containers. Most prefer full sun but there are some varieties that will do equally as well when sited in the shade.

Below are some of our favourites.

Erysimum ‘Fragrant Sunshine’

Like the name suggests, this variety shows off with masses of scented, sunshine yellow coloured flowers that may sometimes feature streaks of red. The blooms tower above a dome of dense, evergreen foliage and what's more, bees and butterflies love them!

Height: 60cm  Spread: 90cm
Position: Sunny, in fertile well-drained soil. Likes chalky/limy or neutral soil.

Erysimum ‘Bowles’ Mauve

This hardy, evergreen perennial Wallflower bears non-stop mauve flowers from April through until late autumn. It can begin to look leggy at the end of the season but this can easily be resolved by lightly trimming once flowering is over.

Height: 50cm  Spread: 70cm
Position: Best in a sunny part of the garden that has shelter from strong winds. Thrives in any good soil but it must be well-drained. Attracts butterflies and bees and is generally ignored by deer and rabbits.

Erysimum ‘Winter Passion’

This hardy evergreen perennial bears ruby red flowers that turn purple, creating a stunning effect throughout spring and on into late summer. Has a small and compact habit so it’s perfect for those smaller spaces. Very good for butterflies and bees.

Height: 50cm  Spread: 50cm

Position:
Place in a sunny position with fertile, well drained, chalky/limy or neutral soil. Will do fine in a well watered container but only for a season, before planting into a border.

Erysimum ‘Apricot Delight’

This hardy, evergreen perennial Wallflower bears apricot-orange coloured flowers from April until July. Perfect for those mixed cottage garden style borders.

Height: 50cm  Spread: 50cm

Position:
Place in a sunny position with fertile, well drained, chalky/limy or neutral soil. Will do fine in a well watered container but only for a season, before planting into a border.

Erysimum 'Walberton's Fragrant Star'

'Fragrant Star' is a compact, bushy variegated wallflower that produces masses of scented, sunshine yellow flowers that can sometimes be streaked with red.

Height: 50cm  Spread: 70cm

Position:  Open and sunny in well drained soil. Likes chalky/limy neutral soil.
