Summer Garden Fete 2019

Summer Garden Fete 2019

Posted on 25 June, 2019

Over the weekend of July 22nd & 23rd, our first ever Summer Garden Fete took place – and what a weekend it was!

Running up to the event it was really cold and threatened to rain, but as the weekend neared we found ourselves blessed with a forecast of bright sunshine and occasional cloud. In fact on the day, the mercury rose well into double figures, the sun beat down, and dare we say, it was a little too hot for some! We hugely enjoyed seeing so many of you pop on down to Beetham Nurseries to join us for a weekend filled with food tastings, childrens' entertainment, live music, and much more! Perfect weather! Perfect weekend!

On Saturday, author Glynnis Maguire and illustrator Becca Hall signed copies of 'Magic Maguire and the Happy Hat', while children and visitors wrote down their own happy thoughts which were then adorned to our very own Happy Tree.

Glynnis and Becca created a really positive vibe which was a super addition to our Summer Garden Fete! It was so lovely to read all the 'happy labels' at the end of the day!

We were also joined by some of our favourite local suppliers, Mike from Pennington's Spirits and Liqueurs, who let us taste his award winning Lakes Moon Gin as well as a myriad of other tipples all made locally and produced from the finest of local ingredients. Tom who brought along his award winning Cuckoo Gin for us to try and Barbara who provided us with tasters of Kin Toffee Vodka - a rich vodka with rich caramel tones and a subtle kick produced in the heart of the Lakes.

Jon from Samurai Saws (specialising in providing high-quality pruning tools made from premium SK-5 steel for both the professional arborist and domestic market) brought along a range of Samurai products including hand saws, folding saws, pole saws and secateurs for visitors to try. Renowned designer, Janet Morley - one half of Perkins and Morley, brought along a collection of best selling greetings cards, homeware and gifts - all proudly designed and made here in the UK.

Jacqui from Fancy Fox Face Painting entertained children with creative face painting while talented Kendal band, Scrogan's Run provided us with the perfect acoustic soundtrack! OutdoorChef were here, showing us how to make the very most of their brilliant grills and barbecues, with plenty of delicious tasters to enjoy and Andrew Valoriani from Forno Valoriani demonstrated the versatility of their wood fired pizza ovens by making some of the very best pizzas and garlic breads we've ever tasted!

No weekend would be complete without Bob's Owls who kept us all entertained by his three beautiful owls on both Saturday and Sunday. Bob was rarely without an audience - visitors enjoyed learning all about his owls and some even got to hold Kinda, a beautiful Snowy Owl.

Sunday dawned cloudy but warm, breaking into beautiful sunshine by the afternoon, providing us with the perfect end to a lovely weekend! Mr Fitzpatrick's Vintage Cordials joined us with a selection of traditional favourite beverages as well as some new and unique flavours that offered the perfect refreshment for a summer's afternoon while Yorkshire-based Dark Woods Coffee brought specialty brews and expert knowledge on all things coffee as well as a number of new and exciting rare coffees. Dark Woods have won many Great Taste awards and can trace each of their blends back to their very roots with each of their carefully roasted coffees having an extensive back story.

We were also joined by Hannah from Docker Duck Eggs, Gareth from Pure Lakes Skincare and Steve and Simone from Willowpool Designs who demonstrated the traditional art of willow weaving.

On both days, children joined us in our seed planting and plant pot decorating workshop. There were some fantastic creations - we hope you haven't forgotten to water them!

Paul from Paul's Pancakes cooked up a storm, offering the most delicious traditional French crepes covered in chocolate, honey, and a myriad of other sweet options. Karl from Bongo Balloons entertained with an array of balloon sculpted creations, and local band Untethered Utd provided us with the perfect Sunday soundtrack.

A huge thank you to all those who entered our children's colouring competition – it was incredibly difficult to choose our two winners, Jessica aged 10 from Manchester and Tess aged 5 from Kendal. Congratulations!

We're delighted to announce that the proceeds from our Face Painting and Balloon Making amounting to the sum of £80 were donated to the local charity, a Breath For Life.

If you came to our Summer Garden Fete, then we hope that you enjoyed it, if you missed it then don't worry, we're already looking forward to next year!
