Planning and Designing Beds & Borders– Success with challenging spots - Tuesday 3rd March 2026

Planning and Designing Beds & Borders

This workshop is very practical and its aim is for you to discover the principles of planning and design, and how to apply these to your garden to achieve the very most from it, whatever you feel is its limitations may be!! Come along and join Marguerite Hughes in learning how to make the most of those challenging areas and bring colour and interest to problem spots — whether they are shady, wet, hot or dry, cold and windy or any other site causing you issues. Whether you live on the coast, in a high or hilly location, a rural spot or any garden site or soil that you struggle with — this workshop will give you the tools to plan & plant your borders to the best effect.

The day will include planning and design tips, plant suggestions and plant combinations for challenging sites, and how to achieve long-term interest in such areas.

There will be lots of practical advice on techniques, such as testing and improving your soil and understanding factors such as aspects.

The last 30 minutes of the session will allow for a summary, a round-up, and a Q&A.

All you need to bring with you on the day is a notebook and pen. You will be given handouts relevant to the workshop to take home. There will be lots of opportunities during the day to handle materials referred to during the session. The workshop is very interactive, and at any point during the day, you can ask questions relating to your own gardens.
